As a homeschooling mom, I am always on the lookout for new and interesting ways to present educational material. As a history and geography buff, teaching children who are NOT “buffs” 🙂 , I especially get excited about products that might boost their interest levels in those subjects. So, when I was asked to review the United States Trivia Pack from Python Printable Games, I thought “why not?”
Python makes many types of educational resources available for immediate download to your own computer and then you print them on your own printer. I received a link to download the United States Trivia Pack for this review. The link took me to a web page where I was able to download the files for each individual state. I was somewhat surprised that there was not a file that included all the states in one, but other than a time issue, it wasn’t that big of a deal. Downloading the files was simple and they downloaded without errors or problems. My personal preference would have been to not have to sit and click on each individual state file to download them individually, but after a few minutes, I had all the files saved to my computer and was able to open and review them.
The state trivia pages are fairly basic. I think I anticipated more of a flashcard/memory card format and they are actually just trivia questions, printed up as a quiz sheet. An answer sheet is also supplied. The upper right-hand corner of each page has a graphic of the state’s shape with their state bird layered over the top. There are no maps or other graphical elements included. From there, each state trivia page includes 15 questions about the state, ranging from some basic state information to some far-out and unusual trivia.
The price for the set is $19.95 and while it might be an interesting activity (I can’t imagine a scenario where you would use any state more than once.) occasionally, most of the information is the kind of data I already have my students compile from a state’s official website or by googling fun facts about a state. My students have successfully put their own such “trivia” lists together when studying a specific state and even then, I was able to direct the focus to more relevant historical facts, that I would hope for them to retain.
The United States Trivia Pack was an interesting product to use as a fun activity to break up the monotony of regular deskwork. However, for our own use, I did not find that it provided any real educational “meat” and I would not personally spend the $19.95 to purchase it, as I could easily compile the information on my own.
If pressed for time, a parent or teacher might appreciate the convenience of a quick download of basic information, saving them the time of putting something together on their own. It would be one of those issues of weighing the convenience and determining if that value warranted the cost in that particular situation. To determine for yourself, how Python Printable Products might work for you, you can visit their free downloads page and try a sampling of what is available.
I received a free download of the United States Trivia Pack through Tomoson in order to conduct this product review. As with all Busy-at-Home reviews, the views and opinions expressed are wholly my own. No payment was received and a positive review was not required.
