Calm is strength! We all know it instinctively, and yet, in the heat of the moment, our kids know just how to “push our buttons” and we lose our cool, often forfeiting the battle in the process. If you find yourself too often repeating instructions, nagging, cajoling, bribing and scolding, the practical techniques taught in Fred Jones‘ 3-DVD set on Parenting, may be just the tools you need to equip yourself to get back into the position of authority with your children and hold that ground. I was really impressed with the ideas and skills that were taught and the practical ways in which they can be implemented to help you say, “No,” and mean it, to not engage and escalate an argument, to teach your children self-control, responsibility and good values.
Typically, I would be classified as a skeptic when it comes to most contemporary products on parenting and to say that I entered into this review without a long list of doubts would be less than truthful, but the titles of the individual DVD’s piqued my curiosity and convinced me that these were not more politically correct ideas from someone with a lot of letters after their name, but no experience with children. I have long held to the belief that discipline is not something you do TO a child, but something you do FOR them. Loving and caring for a child means setting boundaries, protecting them by consistently enforcing the boundaries and doing it in a way that communicates our authority without losing our cool and acting like an out of control kid, ourselves. This kind of authority and boundaries lets children feel secure and loved — safe. Ducking our responsibility and letting the kids “run the show” may seem easier, in the moment, but the pain and long-term damage that creates can devastate a child’s future and the harmony in your home. I think that Tools for Teaching is an affordable training tool for parent organizations, adult Sunday School classes or just for you, right in the quiet of your own home, to reflect on and learn techniques that will aid you in giving your children the gift of clearly defined, consistent boundaries and a parent who loves them so much, they will consistently uphold those boundaries with a peaceful and calm countenance. When you have regained the authority in your home, the doors are flung wide open to teach important skills and values and to build a relationship with your children that you will enjoy for a lifetime.
It sounds too good to be true, but while the author understands we are all going to mess up and make mistakes, occasionally, he shows you that you can quickly recover and get back on track. He provides the tools and the training to effectively use these simple, effective techniques, demonstrating and giving ample time for you to role play with others in the group and to perfect your skills. The DVD’s provide common sense instruction in skills that every parent should possess. They understand the need for parents to lead and teach children, not vice versa. After viewing them, I believe they can equip a generation of parents to teach children in a way that has been pushed aside for decades and thereby provide future generations of children with values, respect, a strong work-ethic and the self-discipline to assure them happier, healthier and more successful futures. I hope you’ll take a look around the Tools for Teaching website, watch all their sample videos and then start a list of those parents, yourself or others, who can benefit from this great DVD series. With Christmas only weeks away, this could be the perfect gift for someone you care about who is struggling or ready to give up. With this DVD series, what you would really be giving is a gift of renewed hope and peace. It’s time for parents to enjoy meaningful relationships with their children, instead of “just getting through it”. I believe that Tools for Teaching: Parent Edition provides great tools to help you do exactly that!
