Summer learning is not the first thing that typically comes to mind when we think about fun summer activities. It may be time for you and your family to see summer learning from a different perspective, however. Everyone looks forward to summer — kids and parents alike! When it finally gets here, the reality isn’t always as stunningly action-packed and fun as we’ve been hoping, though. The idea of summer, and it’s inherent potential, makes us all enthusiastic for the possibilities. However, time, circumstances and finances can force us to reign in larger plans, and we have to realistically begin sprinkling extra fun into our normal routines, rather than having one explosively fun experience after another. It’s good for all of us to appreciate the things we DO have and not waste energy pining after what we don’t. That’s not always an easy character quality to instill in disappointed children, though. Even with all the great outdoors available and an inordinate number of toys, games and electronics at their disposal, it’s not that uncommon to hear a child saying they are bored, during summer vacation. Tell me I’m not the only one to experience this phenomenon. lol
What’s a busy parent or grandparent to do? Involving the kids in YOUR summertime activities can put a big dent in their “excess” time and teach them some much needed skills while they’re having fun and getting to spend time with you. Summer learning really CAN be a fun experience for you, and for them. In my experience, kids really enjoy gardening, when they get to help decide what is being grown and have an opportunity to be actively involved in producing a healthy harvest. Enjoying the fruits of their labors and learning how to prepare and cook that produce for the whole family to enjoy is another way for them to be learning AND having fun.
Parents can keep their children entertained and active, while giving them a boost ahead that preps them for the upcoming school year, too, by continuing their learning in a fun and creative way, over the summer. Summer learning can be as interesting and fun as you’re willing to make it. Carson Dellosa Summer Bridge Workbooks take all the work, effort and planning out of it for you and provide some great ideas to encourage your kids to have fun learning. Their Summer Bridge Activities series is teacher-recommended and focuses on grade-specific skills. No child can resist the temptation of conducting fun and messy science experiments, or embarking on an adventure, reading a captivating story. We’re always seeking opportunities to spark our kids’, and grandkids’, interest in learning while enjoying a fun activity. From our fourteen-year-old daughter to our grandchildren, who are younger, we want them all to realize that learning is not only an important responsibility, it can also be something they really enjoy.
One of our favorite, soon-to-be-fifth graders is transitioning from homeschool to the public middle school, next fall. It’s a time of excitement, as well as apprehension, for both herself and her parents. One thing she is doing, this summer to be sure she stays sharp and has a smooth start into her first year in public school, is to spend a few minutes each day with Carson Dellosa Summer Bridge Workbooks. The one designed for kids transitioning from 4th to 5th grade is PERFECT for her. The fun activities keep her mentally sharp, provide practical life application opportunities and spur creative ideas for completing projects and activities. With a family trip to Seattle, just around the corner, this lesson on Time Zones isn’t just something she needs to learn, it is part of the excitement and anticipation for her vacation and a life skill she will be putting to use very soon!
