I received a Demeter Mobile Planter Cart to facilitate this post about my small space garden. Views and opinions are wholly my own.
75 degrees and glorious sunshine…ice and snow storm…54 degrees and sunny…68 degrees…75 degrees…snow showers…64 degrees and sunny. lol Is this the way your February and March have looked? The abnormal seems to have become normal, here in Nebraska, when it comes to weather. While I have been enjoying the unseasonably warm days that allow me to throw open the windows and air out the house, I have had to resist the urge to dig and plant and garden, at least outside. We’re close to the time where I could get away with planting cool-weather crops like lettuce, peas or spinach, but plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and beans will have to wait until the last danger of frost is past…most likely in May. That means that once my seeds were started indoors, my gardening efforts needed to be curtailed, for the time being. So, I’ve turned my attention to planning. The home we bought last September has only a tiny fraction of the yard space of our previous home. That means I need to figure out how I will make the best use, and achieve the most abundant harvest from my new small space garden.
I use the term “garden” loosely. No more of the lovely raised beds I’m used to and we won’t be cultivating even a small patch of ground out of the lawn. There simply isn’t room in our minimal yard. It’s been a fantastic change for us — down-sizing; but in the area of gardening it presents a few challenges I haven’t had to deal with before. What I DO have are wonderful “flower beds” around the perimeter of the house, plus a deck with a pergola cover and trellising. I can utilize those for my small space garden. Both have fabulous southern exposure.
Never give up hope of having fresh, flavor-packed heirloom vegetables grown at home. There are so many great small space garden solutions when your landscape square footage is limited. Get creative to solve some of those challenges. I will need to do a good amount of container gardening and am toying with the idea of how to take vining plants vertical, utilizing the trellis and pergola from the deck. So while it will certainly be limited, I WILL have a productive and veggie-filled garden. You can, too. Don’t let that limited space keep you from enjoying the unparalleled quality and flavor of food you grow for yourself and your family.
My plan is to share some of my down-sized garden ideas with you, as we go throughout the season. For instance, I found a cute cart-style planter at Gardener’s Supply Company. I’m over-the-moon for my Demeter Mobile Planter Cart! I chose the Storm Blue color. It fits perfectly with the color scheme I’m hoping to apply to our outdoor spaces. It’s made from powder-coated steel. With two wheels and a handle, I can easily move it to any spot that’s getting great sun or quickly bring it out of harms way during a Nebraska summer storm. Having a waist-high planter, that saves my back and knees is also a huge plus, in my book! And it doesn’t hurt that it was easy to assemble. My highly talented crew had it all together in about 15 minutes. (And that was with stopping to take pictures, in between steps. lol) How’s that for a perfect small space garden plot!!?!!
The cart has growing space that that will be ideal for an on-deck herb garden. That puts it close to the kitchen, where all those flavorful and aromatic herbs will be used, without stealing a huge footprint for our usable deck space. The planting area is 40″ long and only 10″ deep — perfect to slide alongside the deck rail and not stick out too far. It will hold about 50 quarts of quality soil. The cart also has a built-in drain to prevent roots from becoming over-saturated. Adding even more space and function to a great product is the wire shelf underneath the planter. I imagine it will be great for storing a watering can and some small tools or a few pots of flowers. Besides being functional and a good fit, I’m excited about the beauty, and homey-feeling, that the color of the Demeter Mobile Planter Cart and my own small space garden plants will add to our outdoor living area.
I’m looking forward to overcoming the challenges of gardening in a smaller space, this spring, and I’m fortunate to have discovered Gardener’s Supply Company.
