I received Schlage door hardware to facilitate this review and to test in my own home. Views and opinions expressed are wholly my own.
Don’t you love that feeling you get when you step out onto the sidewalk after getting an updated hairstyle or trying out haircolor that is just a little bit daring and dramatic? What is it about making such small changes that can make us feel like we’re brand new, through and through? We walk about two inches taller and smile at everyone passing by. We have a brand new air of confidence and joy. We FEEL fantastic! Looking good changes how we feel and how we present ourselves to the world.
I have to tell you that I get the same kinda “rush” when I make changes or updates to our home. The difference between a house and a home, I think, is that we are so personally invested in our homes. A house is just a building, but a home…well, a home is a reflection of us and the way we live… of the way we want others to feel when they visit. A home is welcoming, warm and inviting. It is a haven for family and friends and we work hard at making it “feel” that way with the choices we make for decorating and for updates.
You and I both know that something as simple as a new bedspread, curtains or paint color can change a lifeless room into a calming oasis or a fun teen gathering place. Wall decor has a huge impact on how we “feel” about a space and changing it up, often gives us that “new haircut” feeling. Seasonal floral arrangements, candles or throw pillows can set the stage for the exact mood you want to create. Even something as small as changing out switch plates or outlet covers can change the way we feel about a room. Sometimes, we just need a makeover to start feeling like ourselves, again, and sometimes, that’s what a house needs, to start feeling like a home.
We had some welcome, albeit unexpected, news this week, and because of it, our home is no longer for sale. Woot! The funny thing about selling a home is that you sort of do exactly the opposite of what I was describing above. We’ve spent a year depersonalizing and “letting go” and when that happens, what was once your home, becomes “just a house”. Not being as personally invested in it, meant we weren’t pouring much of ourselves into it or doing anything more than making sure it was clean and sparkling for prospective buyers. We weren’t really motivated to spend energy or money doing updates that we would be leaving behind. Stepping back, after hearing that we were going to get to stay a while longer, and taking a look at our house, I realized I was ready for it to be a HOME, again. It was definitely time for a brand new “
Over the next weeks and months, I think we will continue to put personal touches back into our home, but this week, thanks to a wonderful partnership with Schlage, our first updated look is complete and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Using hardware in Schlage’s new polished nickel finish, I was able to change all the door hardware on our main floor and bring the style of our entry into this decade. The hardware is gorgeous! Our doors are gorgeous! Today, I’m definitely walking taller.
Schlage is a brand that I am already personally acquainted with and in which I have full confidence of product quality. We have owned several homes and Schlage has always been our first choice when making changes to our doors. I LOVE that their products reflect the current trends in design and decor, while still offering a wide variety of options that make it easy for me to express my own personal style. I chose their gorgeous new Polished Nickel finish for our makeover and I’m so excited that I did!
Our home is not modern, by any stretch of the imagination. Rather than cool or monotone colors and lots of straight lines and angles, its design has more warm woods, earthtones and curved lines. We have also added some updated, but complimentary, finishes that make our living space an inviting mix of classic and contemporary. Schlage’s new polished nickel finish on hardware from their Wakefield series and Accent Collection were perfect design choices to bring new life and style to the doors throughout our home. I chose to replace knobs with levers because I love the updated look. I also chose levers that reflected the soft, curved lines already represented in our home’s architecture and design.
I was actually quite embarrassed when I took a close look at the hardware on our front door. I knew it was dated and original to the house (early 80’s), but I had not realized how completely worn and offensive it had become. We pull the car into the garage and enter the house through there. I probably haven’t used our front door more than a dozen times in the 5 years we’ve lived here. Talk about out of sight, out of mind. The horrifying truth was impossible to hide once I dug into this project, though. I was so happy to remove the old door knob, pull and deadbolt. With their beautiful new replacements in hand, I set out to put a warm, contemporary new look into our foyer. I love, love, love the results!

I was amazed at how simple the door hardware was to install. I pulled everything out of the box, grabbed my pink phillips head screwdriver and got to work. The instructions were clear and concise with illustrations for each step. I also loved that many of the individual parts of my door hardware selections, were adjustable, so it was sure to fit my current set-up without altering my doors. Schlage couldn’t have made it easier.
I opted for a standard keyed entry with a deadbolt, but had a great time browsing all the security and technology built into keyless and keypad entry options. Schlage stays at the forefront of changes in design trends and technology, so they have something to fit every home’s style and family’s needs. All Schlage products are certified by the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA), whose aim it is to provide consumers with top security grade products. David and I are so excited with the results of our first-floor makeover, that we’re going to do the upstairs and basement, as well! It really WILL be a whole house makeover. I will admit, though, that all this gorgeous hardware has got me feeling like we should probably paint the doors. I feel a brand new project coming on! lol
