It’s easy to get caught up in the “busy-ness” of life and miss out on simple moments that mean an awful lot in the grand scheme of making memories with the family. Yesterday, was one of the most enjoyable days I’ve had, all summer; and the truth is, there was nothing particularly spectacular about it. What I DID do was arrange my day, so that the trip to the city that I needed to take for work, became the side event. It was accomplished, but rather than being the main focus, I was able to fit the necessary tasks around a simple, but fun afternoon with our youngest daughter and two oldest grandkids. Our five grandchildren have been staying with us, this week, while their folks are on a mission trip. The younger three made a quick sidetrip to the other grandma’s for a few days and will be back on Wednesday, so I decided to take the older kids, including our eleven-year-old, with me to Lincoln. There was lots of laughing and silliness. There were outside adventures and lots of pictures. There was running and bouncing on a suspension bridge and eating wild mulberries. Most of all there was memorable time, spent together, enjoying the simple pleasure of one another’s company. This is really an under-rated commodity in our culture — family time, for the sheer joy of family time. We loved it!
Part of the excitement of “going to Lincoln” is getting to eat out. Just before our park adventure, we swung into the outdoor food court at South Pointe Plaza to try Arby’s new limited edition summer menu items — the Pecan Chicken Salad Sandwich, thick cut House Made Chips, and creamy Triple Berry Shakes. Our yummy meal was as much a part of the fun as the rest of our activities. The kids and I FLIPPED for the crispy, flavor-packed House Made Chips! They weren’t as keen, as I was on the Chicken Salad Sandwich. Every last one of them ate the delicious filling and left the amazing bread. Kids! Me? I didn’t leave a morsel! And the Triple Berry Shakes were a refreshing treat to cool off from the summer heat.
With tummies full, we were ready to tackle an afternoon of fun and giggling! Leftover chips and shakes made the journey with us, and we were off to Pioneer’s Park, but not before one final picture to remember our lunch at Arby’s.
If you haven’t checked out Arby’s limited edition summer menu items, I can heartily recommend that you do. And then, do something fun and memorable with your family. Make it a day that’s about being together, laughing and playing. Just like our wilderness park adventure, it doesn’t have to cost a thing; but the benefits received will be extraordinary for the well-being and memory-making of your favorite people! What’s your family’s favorite simple family activity?
