Ok, this post is for everybody, but most especially for husbands who are starting to panic, about now, and who struggle with gift shopping. It’s also for their wives, who can take a simple step to help them out, this year. Is it just my husband, or all husbands, that don’t think this gifting-thing through, early enough? David really DOES want to find the perfect thing that will surprise and delight me. He, also, has every expectation that on December 24th at 2 pm, he will be able to *pop* out quick and grab it. He doesn’t necessarily know what that “perfect” gift IS, yet, but he knows with every fiber in his being, that it will be right there on the shelf, calling to him, when he arrives at the store. It’s not until he is midway through this process, that he realizes that he and the 9000 other panic-stricken guys, wandering the mall aisles with him, were under the same delusion.
Women can choose to get upset about this dilemma, or they can be the awesome partners they were created to be and help out their favorite guy. As much as we all WISH that he could read our minds, know us so intimately and understand us so completely that he KNOWS what will be perfect, it’s truly not that realistic to expect it. He’s as busy and tangled up with life as you are. Gifts are more of an emotional investment for us. Not so much for them. What would be a perfect gift gets past him as easily as last week’s big game stats slip from OUR memories. It doesn’t mean that either of us care less for what’s important to the other, just that we prioritize a little differently. 🙂 He helps keep you up-to-date with that awesome playoff finals poster (and yeah, you know the one. ) YOU can make his life simpler by creating a Christmas Wish List of things you would love most and being sure he has it in hand, with plenty of time to shop. It’s the right thing to do. Trust me.
Give him plenty of options, in all categories. Do you have your eye on some new kitchen gadget that is going to make you into a chef extraordinaire? Or is there some item of home decor that will be the perfect finish in the reading corner you redecorated, this summer? Maybe you want to update your wardrobe or would love a gift certificate to try out a new hairstyle in the new year. Be sure to add one or two of those items to your Christmas wish list, as well. He’ll want to know about that awesome camera you’ve been eyeing and don’t forget how much you’ve been wishing for tickets to that off-Broadway musical. Most of all, be sure to include some romantic options on the list, too. He WANTS to be romantic, and make you swoon, but sometimes he’s so afraid he won’t get it right, that he opts for something safer. Let him know what speaks romance to your heart. Add a favorite perfume or a piece of beautiful jewelry.
