Well, it’s almost here. My 53rd birthday will be next Thursday and I’ve been reflecting, quite a bit, on this new “chapter” in my life. For 31 years, I’ve been a wife, a mom, and a homeschool teacher – before anything else, and above all, except Christ. It was all I wanted and where I was needed and it’s been such an amazing blessing to live, love and grow in those shoes 🙂 Of course, I’m still a wife and mom, but my role is definitely changing as I’ve passed that half-century mark in life. 🙂 I’m officially retired from teaching, this year. That is an unusual feeling. Our son is taking a few final classes outside the home and will likely graduate in December, instead of waiting until May. Our youngest daughter, almost thirteen, started at the local Middle School when David was sick and she has THRIVED there. We’ve decided she will continue on in the public education system. When I started our homeschool journey, almost 24 years, and five children, ago, those are words I would never have considered. Even two years ago, I was panicked at the thought of it. Today, I am so at peace with that decision and it’s a beautiful thing to watch our daughter continue to excel academically and blossom, right where God has planted her for this new phase of her life…and mine.
So, for the first time in 30 years, I spend my daytime hours in a very quiet and empty house. I’ve read all the sad stories about empty nesters and I half expected this to be a really traumatic experience. What I’ve discovered is that my “nest” is never really empty. 🙂 Our family still gathers at home in the evenings and our older kids and grandkids are frequently here, to keep things lively and fill the house with laughter and fun. What I’ve discovered is that while I LOVE the hustle and bustle and noise a big family creates, I’m also enjoying the quiet.
This blog that I started, as a hobby and a way to share recipes with family, has grown beyond anything I could ever have imagined, thanks to all of you, beautiful readers. It’s provided me a career – something all my own – and my new “quiet time” has afforded me the opportunity and the desire to see just exactly where I can take it, from here. So, thank you! Thank you for being part of my evolution and walking with me into a new season…a season that is about more than just the weather changes. I’m excited and I hope you’ll stick around and see where all this leads.
In the meantime, I have another birthday surprise for you! I have had an epiphany of sorts, in my “quiet time”, and realized how much I enjoy choosing the music I want to listen to and having it with me, wherever I am working. The problem is, none of my devices have what I would call great speakers and since I have things to do on three different levels of our home, I can’t always hear my favorite tunes or radio talk shows from where I’m working. Sol Republic solved my problem and is filling my “new chapter” with BEAUTIFUL, BOLD and PORTABLE sound! I’ve been testing out a DECK, Sol Republic’s wireless speaker that connects to any device, with Bluetooth. Now, whether the music is streaming though my phone, my Kindle or even my laptop, it comes to my ears through the far superior speakers of the DECK — and I can take it with me, without having to drag the device. How cool is that!!!??!!
The DECK can be used for conference calls (sweet!), in the car, at the beach, literally anywhere that you can pair it with another Bluetooth device. I take it with me to the garden and to fold laundry. It’s beside me when I’m creating in the kitchen. It has a 300 foot range! I love the clean, clear sound it provides, no matter where I happen to be and no matter how limited the speakers on my chosen device are. I can’t imagine a teenager who wouldn’t flip for the DECK, and you should definitely add this to your list of awesome Christmas gift ideas; but I’ll tell you what, if you get a chance to grab one for yourself, do it! You won’t believe the difference it can make!
The kids will love a fun feature called Heist Mode. The DECK can be paired with up to 5 devices, at one time. If you use heist mode, anyone in control of one of those five devices can change the music. lol It could make for some interesting mixes. The DECK is powered by larger-than-average R2 sound engines and has 360° full sound. It can be used as a speakerphone when paired with your cell phone and in case the device you want to use it with, doesn’t have Bluetooth, it also has both stereo in, and out, jacks. That means you can not only connect it to your stereo, but you could also daisy chain multiple decks together for an entire WALL of tremendous sound! Another feature I love is that I can use “outdoor boost” to boost the sound and hear clearly when I’m outside or farther away from the DECK. Trust me! You’re going to love everything about this powerful little speaker system.
Here’s the official list of features, in case I left anything out, in all my birthday excitement! 🙂
- 360° Full Sound projects music in every angle giving you great sound anywhere in the room
- Super-Power Wireless allows you to control DECK from up to 300 feet away
