I’ve been using Arm and Hammer’s Essentials Lavender and Linen Dryer Sheets in my laundry this week.  To be honest, they had me at lavender.  It’s definitely one of my favorite fragrances and since I’m one of those people who are dramatically affected, for good or evil, by scent, having one of my less than favorite chores permeated with such a glorious fragrance, makes the job much more pleasant.  The addition of the linen scent maximizes that pleasant experience, because for me it evokes memories of laundry dried outside on the line, in a fresh autumn breeze.  There’s a crisp freshness to linen that when combined with the floral tones of lavender is perfect for laundry.  Opening the box of fabric sheets, I was enveloped in these pleasant scents.

Arm and Hammer Essentials Lavender and Linen Dryer sheets have done a great job in softening the fabrics going through my dryer and preventing that annoying static electricity that wreaks havoc on an otherwise perfect outfit.  The softening agents used are biodegradable and naturally derived from nature.

Lavender essential oil is commonly used as a mood lifter, to soothe tension and depression and to aid in the relief of headaches and muscle aches associated with stress.  It is added to many baby soaps and lotions as a soother and relaxer.  I can only imagine how beneficial it will be to have our bed linens infused with that wonderful fragrance.  Essentials Lavender and Linen Dryer sheets will make that an easy task.  I’m definitely enjoying having these dryer sheets in my laundry cleaning arsenal and I hope you’ll use the link below to print out a $1 coupon and try them for yourself.

What’s That Bzzzzing in the Bathroom? @bhg

That soft, steady humming coming from our bathroom?  Teeth being brushed!  Score!  Anything that makes brushing more appealing and consistent is a definite winner in my book.  Add to that, that the Arm and Hammer Spinbrush ProClean Toothbrush does a significantly better job of cleaning teeth, than a manual toothbrush, and I’m a fan for life!

electric toothbrush

My new Spinbrush ProClean toothbrush from Arm and Hammer. It even came with a free toothpaste sample and a coupon for refill heads!

Complete instructions and a coupon included with the toothbrush.

The Arm and Hammer Spinbrush ProClean toothbrush has dual-action brushing technology.  That means you will get cleaning action moving in two different ways at once.  The round circular head at the top of the brush spins, cleaning and polishing, even between teeth; while the secondary brush moves up and down to scour away plaque and massage along the gumline.  Umm…up to 3700 brush strokes per minute?  Try doing that with a manual toothbrush.   (Just kidding.  No — really — don’t do it.  Your arm muscles will look really strange, when you’re done.  :) )  This special technology means that you can remove up to 70% more plaque than when brushing with a manual toothbrush!*

spinbrush head

The dual action head. It also comes with this handy-dandy dust cover, to keep it clean.

The Spinbrush ProClean uses 2 easy to replace AA batteries and comes in several different colors.  You can get them with soft or medium bristles and when the head becomes worn, you don’t just throw out the whole toothbrush.  Simply replace the head.

I love the polished feel of super clean teeth and the freshness of a clean mouth.  My toothbrush came with a sample of Arm and Hammer Advanced White Brilliant Sparkle toothpaste, which our family was converted to in a previous Switch and Save Challenge.  Combine that awesome whitening toothpaste with the cleaning and polishing power of the Spinbrush ProClean and our dentist is going to be happy and amazed when I take the kids in for checkups later this month.  That’s right, the kids.  I like these toothbrushes, so much, that we had to run out and get one for everyone in the family!  They think they’re fun and they like the way they clean, which translates to more consistent brushing without mom having to nag and remind.  Bzzzzing in the bathroom makes for healthier, brighter smiles.  Healthier brighter smiles makes for a happier mom.  Gotta love the bzzzz.   :)

Saving Money in the Laundry Room: How Close are You to $1000 in Savings? @bhg #SwitchandSaveChallenge

I wish we were one of those AVERAGE families that only do about 400 loads of laundry per year.  I’m guessing we are closer to the 600 range, since that’s closer to a dozen loads per week.  I know, it’s sick and wrong, but, to be fair, and in the interest of full disclosure, I actually HAVE previously mentioned that I do not live with neat and tidy people.  That being said, I want to be as careful as possible to take all the frugal measures I can, in the laundry room.  There are several ways to help keep costs down as I attempt to keep my family presentable and sanitary.  :)

  1. Always wash full loads.  You will waste a lot of electricity, water (and gas if you have a gas water heater, like we do) by doing several small loads, as opposed to one or two full ones.
  2. Use cold water, whenever it is possible.  We all want the cleaning and germ-fighting power of hot water for our towels, tough stains and whites, but for everyday washing without a lot of stain challenges, you’ll be amazed at what a good job cold water does with a good detergent, like Arm and Hammer Power Gel with OxiClean.
  3. Use a good detergent!  Saving money is a big deal, especially in our present economy, but buying the cheapest product isn’t always the best value.  If I have to wash something twice or more to get it clean, not only has a cheaper detergent not saved me money, it may have cost me even more, in electricity, gas and water costs.  Finding a reliable detergent that can meet all your laundry needs in the first wash without buying additional products, like pre-treaters or stain removers, saves money in the long run and saves you time re-doing a job, that in my case, is not my favorite, anyway.  Arm and Hammer Power Gel with OxiClean is a good example of a single product that can do multiple jobs in the laundry room.power gel
  4. Use an energy efficient washing machine.  When it comes time to replace your washer (Mine gasped it’s last and then belched a flood into my laundry room, last October.), look for a machine that has a good Energy Star rating to save on your energy costs to run it, but also look for a high efficiency machine that saves on water use, as well.  Now, these efficient machines can be found in the same price range as conventional water guzzlers and it makes no sense not to make the switch.  I’m loving my new LG high efficiency machine.
  5. Use the correct amount of detergent when you wash your clothes.  Not enough and you run the risk of having to rewash a load, but too much is a problem, too, especially in high efficiency machines.  HE machines have water pumps that can be adversely affected by high-suds detergents, so using the correct soap in the appropriate amount is critical to helping your machine function properly for a long time.
  6. If you are fortunate enough to have a clothesline, use it.  This is actually an item you would never think of someone wishing for, but I do.  The dollars you can save by simply hanging clothes on the line, rather than using a gas or electric dryer can be significant to your family’s budget.  So, yes, in moments of weakness, I covet your clothesline.  I’m working on that.  :)
  7. Watch your local ads and online coupon sites for savings on the detergent that you know is the best value for your family’s cleaning dollar.  Right now, you can print a coupon to save $1 on 2 of any Arm and Hammer Laundry Detergent.  (You’ll actually find $14 in coupon savings there.)  I LOVE saving money!

So with a little pre-planning and thinking it through, you can save some money in the laundry room and put a few dollars back into your family’s budget.  Remember, putting only $19.24 into savings, each week, nets you $1,000 by the end of the year!  What fabulous, fun thing could your family do or give with $1,000?  See, it’s definitely worth the effort and it won’t be hard to get your family on board when they recognize the excellent pay-off, from their frugal efforts.

Laundry, It’s an Ugly Business, But Someone’s Got to Do It: Arm & Hammer Power Gel with OxiClean Review @bhg

I’m not gonna lie.  I am probably one of the most spoiled blessed women I know.  I have lived in homes where the laundry room was too tiny to do more than turn around in there with a basket, to ones where there was no laundry room, at all.  (Picture, a five-gallon diaper pail filled [...]

I’m not gonna lie.  I am probably one of the most spoiled blessed women I know.  I have lived in homes where the laundry room was too tiny to do more than turn around in there with a basket, to ones where there was no laundry room, at all.  (Picture, a five-gallon diaper pail filled with bleach water and dirty cloth diapers, on the way to the laundromat.  It was the best, most rational reason I know, for switching to disposables!  :)   )  So, I have certainly been at the other end of the spectrum and no one is more painfully aware of just how amazing my current laundry room is.  It’s HUGE!

laundry room 2

It's a lovely and extravagently large laundry room. I couldn't get the camera angles wide enough to do justice to how spacious it is, so....

laundry room sink

I took three pictures to try and round out your view of how great it really is. This is, of course, the bath area and the built-in cubby for the washer and dryer with 4 cupboards above.

There’s not only room for my washer and dryer, but a five-foot folding table and a shelf with hang bar, for hanging clothes above it.  There’s a beautiful, large and extraordinarily deep wash basin sink, as well as a shower and toilet.  It gets natural light and fresh air from the window and when it’s too hot for the window to be opened, this beautiful laundry room is air conditioned!  I also have tons of beautiful cabinetry and storage space in there.

more laundry room

I love that deep sink and when hubby installed the shelf and hang bar, the room was complete. My wheeled hampers tuck in perfectly under the folding table. Yup, I'm definitely a very lucky woman.

Ya know what?  I still HATE laundry.  –  lol  –  Don’t get me wrong, I understand how blessed I am to have people in my life who happen to get lots and lots of clothes dirty and how blessed we are to have the clothes we need.  I get it, and appreciate that, but on a scale of 1 to 10, laundry is still probably at about a negative 11 on my list of favorite household chores.  They can’t all be #1, right?  I think part of the reason I dislike it so much is I am someone who likes to do a job or project all the way through without stopping.  If I start it, I want to get it done and see the results.  Laundry has stages — the sorting, the washing, the drying, the folding and hanging, and then finally the putting away.  And frankly, by the time the final stage is reached, my many “blessings” can produce a whole new pile of laundry I need to get started on. As you can imagine, then, I’m no shrinking violet when it comes to asserting which products and procedures work for me, in this job.  I’m picky and I tell it like it is.  I’m not going to use anything that takes longer, costs more or is inefficient, causing me to have to re-do any part of the process.  So, I’m excited that my Switch and Save Challenge for the next four weeks is Arm and Hammer Power Gel with OxiClean.

power gel with oxiclean

Arm and Hammer Power Gel with OxiClean is more than just a detergent, it can also be used as a pre-treater.  A product that can do more than one job is always a plus and a money saver!  It has the added power of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda for freshening laundry and the most amazing gel texture.  I’ve never seen any other laundry detergent made in such a thick, gel formula.  It’s a glossy, brilliant blue liquid/gel that is designed to work even in my high efficiency machine.  The gel clings to and saturates fabrics, working hard to remove tough stains with its OxiClean boost and then rinses away cleanly.

The timing for this Switch and Save Challenge couldn’t be better, as I have a brand new laundry challenge in my home, this summer.

detasseling

This is actually a very good day. :) Hardly any visible mud and muck on his legs and arms. He is often covered, head to toe and on Saturday, the slime was more of a cow dung nature. Yuck! I send him off each morning in waterproof windpants and long sleeves. As the dew on the fields dries and his mud-caked, sweat-drenched and grass-stained clothes become heavy and unnecessary in the heat of the day, he peels them off to reveal this outfit underneath. Those "crusty" clothes, along with mud-caked tennis shoes, are what comes home, stuffed in a bag, for mom each afternoon. That's when I need to work my magic, so he can take off and do it all over, again, the next day.

Stay tuned as I put Arm and Hammer Power Gel with OxiClean through its paces, decrusting and removing stains from the horrifying laundry our resident detasseler brings home, every afternoon, now.  :)   It’s going to be a valiant battle and from what I can tell, so far, Arm and Hammer Power Gel should be an excellent weapon tool!

A Promise Kept: Arm and Hammer Advanced White Brilliant Sparkle Toothpaste @bhg

On July 19, 2011, in Budget-wise, Family Circus, Giveaways, Home and Garden, Reviews, by Glenda Embree

In a society that constantly bombards us with the idea that “truth is relative”, (I disagree, by the way), it’s a refreshing thing to find a company that delivers what it promises.  That’s how I’m feeling about Arm and Hammer after four weeks of using their Advanced White Brilliant Sparkle Toothpaste.  They didn’t promise that my teeth would be white in 2 hours or even in 14 days.  They didn’t require me to wear uncomfortable inserts or products for long periods in an attempt to bleach my teeth.  They simply stated that, “It safely polishes with micro-polishers for whiter and brighter teeth, and gently cleans away surface stains and penetrates tiny crevices to clean deep stains.”  So, what I expected was that over a period of time, with regular use, I could expect my teeth to be whiter than when I started using Arm and Hammer Advanced White Brilliant Sparkle Toothpaste.  That’s exactly what I got.  I couldn’t be more pleased!

Arm and Hammer Advanced White Brilliant Sparkle Toothpaste

My teeth aren’t PhotoShop white.  They never have been.  I was born with somewhat “off-white” teeth.  :)   They’re whiter than when I started and I have no reason to believe that won’t continue, as I move forward using the Arm and Hammer toothpaste.  I drink cola and iced tea on a daily basis.  Neither are best friends to dental health, but the stains are easily polished away with Advanced White Brilliant Sparkle.  I can still enjoy the drinks I like and have healthy, clean and whiter teeth.  Love it!  :)

My mouth is healthy and clean, using a product that delivers on its claims and leaves my teeth feeling dentist-office smooth.  It’s hard to beat that, but even better, my two younger kids are converts.  No one was more surprised than me, because they haven’t always been the most faithful with their oral hygiene, but they love Arm and Hammer toothpaste, meaning they are more consistent with their brushing.  For my youngest, especially, that’s HUGE!  The clean, smooth feel of her teeth and knowing they will get whiter and whiter as she continues to use it are inspiring great new habits in her.  I don’t know if it’s vanity or common sense, but the truth is, I don’t care.  She’s on a healthier path and that’s all good to me.

DIY is a fabulous way to save money, whether you are doing projects around the house or whitening your teeth.  Professional bleaching or whitening at the dentist office is incredibly expensive.  Do it yourself at home and put the dollars saved toward something fun for your family.  Also, from my previous two posts, you know there is more to toothpaste than meets the “tooth”, so to speak.  I used it to polish jewelry and to hang a shelf with impressive speed and accuracy, if I do say so myself.  Many of you shared other great tips and uses for toothpaste, on those posts, as well.  One product that does many jobs is always a good idea and a definite budget stretcher.

I was thrilled to find a $1 coupon attached to boxes of Arm and Hammer Advanced White Brilliant Sparkle when I ran to pick up another tube, today at my local Wal-Mart.  I did a little comparison shopping with the other major brand whitening toothpastes, while I was there, and found that not only was Arm and Hammer the same or less in price, but the tube contained 7.2 oz of toothpaste.  Other brands were 6 oz or less for the same or higher prices.  Brilliant!  It does what it says at the same or better price and gives me more in the package.  Seems like a bargain to me.  Hustle out to your local pharmacy or store and see if you can find the tubes with the Switch and Save $1 coupon, too.  You can do something great for your family’s dental health and save money in the process.  That makes you frugal AND smart!  :)   (I already knew that about you.)

A Polished Smile with Arm and Hammer Advanced White Brilliant Sparkle Toothpaste @bhg

I began  a new 4-week challenge with Arm and Hammer, last week.  I switched from my old brand of toothpaste and started using Arm and Hammer Advanced White Brilliant Sparkle Toothpaste. Always seeking out the frugal option, I wouldn’t say I am brand-loyal when it comes to toothpaste.  I tend to look for what I have a coupon for or is on sale.  Arm and Hammer Advanced White may well be the product that wins me over, though.  It has all the great cleaning power I expect, along with fluoride, a great taste, tartar control ingredients and whitening power, plus compared to the pricey whitening products on the market, today, it’s a great bargain!

toothpaste

I left college in 1982, (after completing all but three semesters toward a degree in elementary education) and moved to Missouri, where I promptly ignored my previous educational training, and went to work for a fantastic dentist, running the front office.  The dentist trained me to work chair-side during procedures, as well as to clean teeth.  I loved that smooth, newly polished feel immediately after having my own teeth cleaned and it was a real kick for me to send people out of the office with whiter, brighter smiles.  A fellow co-worker and myself learned to stretch the polishing cable into the hallway and use the mirror hanging there to achieve that polished clean feel for ourselves, on an almost weekly basis.  :)   To be honest, that is probably the one and only thing that I have missed in being home with my kids, all these years — access to dental polishing equipment.  — lol

I wasn’t sure how I was going to like the Arm and Hammer toothpaste.  I’ve heard many stories from earlier generations, in my family, about brushing their teeth with Arm and Hammer Baking soda and how great a job it did.  I love it for so many other cleaning jobs, I have tried using it for my teeth on several occasions, but could never get past the extreme salty flavor.  If the toothpaste had that same overpowering taste, I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to see the challenge through.  So, it was a great surprise to find that Arm and Hammer Advanced White Brilliant Sparkle Toothpaste has not only a fresh, minty taste, but is also far less gritty than I expected.  It has just enough abrasive material to leave my teeth with the closest I have come, at home, to a dentist-office polished feel.  After one week of use, I’m really liking it.  I’m anxious to see if there is a difference in the whiteness of my teeth at the end of the four week trial.

Arm and Hammer’s research data shows that Arm and Hammer Advanced White Brilliant Sparkle Toothpaste removes up to 5X more plaque in hard-to-reach places than ordinary toothpaste.* It whitens and brightens teeth for a clean, fresh taste, gently cleaning away surface stains and penetrating tiny crevices to clean away deeper stains. It safely polishes your teeth with micro-polishers for whiter and brighter teeth and leaves my mouth feeling fresh and clean.

The great news is that you can try out this effective oral health product along with me, by ordering your own FREE sample.  I’m convinced you’ll love the fresh, clean results you achieve with Arm and Hammer Advanced White Brilliant Sparkle Toothpaste, too.

I’m going to have more info, tips and savings ideas to share with you over the next few weeks and we’ll do two more $25 VISA gift card giveaways, in July, so check back often and learn how Arm and Hammer Advanced White Brilliant Sparkle Toothpaste can brighten and whiten your smile and save you money doing it.

Stretching Your Budget with Arm and Hammer Baking Soda

Two weeks ago, I shared with you that I am participating in the Arm and Hammer Switch and Save Challenge.  This month, I’ve been working specifically with baking soda.  I’ve shared a couple of the different ways I use baking soda around our home, but one important benefit we haven’t discussed yet, is the way that Arm and Hammer Baking Soda can stretch your  budget, saving money for other things your family needs or helping to grow your savings account.

baking soda

Because we live in a “quick-fix”, convenience oriented society, we have a plethora of product options when it comes to tasks we need to complete around our homes.  There is a specialized cleanser, spray, or gel for just about any job you can name.  Many of those products are toxic for our children, pets and environment; and are available only if you are willing to pay a premium cost.  Often, we have been using a product for so many years, it never occurs to us that there may be a better, or at least equal, cleaning solution, at a more affordable price.  For many years, Arm and Hammer Baking Soda has been an inexpensive alternative to chemical cleaning products, but convenience and habit compel us to pick up the same cleansers week after week, month after month without giving it a second thought.

This week, I challenged myself, and now, I want to challenge you, to think about the products you use and the money you spend on them.  How much could you save, doing your regular chores just as effectively, substituting Arm and Hammer Baking Soda for your usual cleaning products?  Remember when we discussed, here, that saving only $19.24 per week nets you $1000 cash in your savings account at the end of one year!??!!  How much of that $19.24 can you save, by switching  from your usual cleaning products to non-toxic, environmentally friendly Arm and Hammer baking soda for some of your routine household tasks?

At less than $1 per box, Arm and Hammer Baking Soda has always been an exceptional value whether I’m baking or doing household chores.  The familiar orange box is always in my cupboard,  but I only recently discovered that it can be purchased in bags as large as 13.5 lbs.  We all know that buying in bulk is a great way to cut costs on products we use most often.  Plus, money-saving Arm and Hammer coupons are available at their website, so all you have to do is print them and save money at your local store!

For tips and ideas of all the ways you can use baking soda for cleaning in your home and replace expensive cleaning supplies, visit this great Arm and Hammer resource page.  You’ll be amazed at all you can save (and maybe win) taking the Switch and Save Challenge along with me!
