We adopted a new doll into our family, last week! Her name is DeeDee and she’s part of the new Gund Girls collection.

DeeDee is the dollwe received to review from the Gund Girls collection.
Gund Girls are 17-inches of soft, plushy adorable! They are recommended for ages 3 and up and come with one removable outfit for playing dress-up. The dolls in this collection are “best friends in fashion”. Each of the seven Gund Girls has her own fashion flair and personality. Our DeeDee, for example, loves to travel and have adventures with her friends. Her favorite color is lavender, which matches her eyes. The cool part is that their outfits are interchangeable, so if you own more than one, you KNOW they will be trading clothes! A girl’s gotta do, what a girl’s gotta do. :)

What do I love about the Gund Girls? Though they are “plushies” they are durable, and seem very well-made. And then, there’s that “plushy” part. They’re soft — perfect for hugging and for taking a nap with. They have big, adorable, over-stuffed feet with bright-colored shoes. Who doesn’t love some pretty shoes, right? Everything about the dolls is colorful and appealing. When my granddaughters are here, they want to take DeeDee everywhere they go.
Any toy that encourages imagination the way a doll does, is a favorite on my list. No batteries to replace, no advanced technological degrees required — just good, old-fashioned fun and brain-power. You never have to tell a child how to play with a doll. Their creativity just automatically goes into high gear, and before long, you hear little snippets of “conversation” and witness all kinds of wonderful imaginative play. That’s exactly what’s been happening at our house. DeeDee is always swinging on the arm of one granddaughter or the other. And once in a while, their little brother hauls out the Rescue Heroes police car or high-jacks the Barbie jeep and takes her for a spin. I found her like this after the kids left, last evening.

Out for a spin in the Rescue Heroes police car. I found her, this way, after the grandkids had gone home. DeeDee gets around!
I’ll bet you have little people in your life that would love the Gund Girls dolls, too! Check them out on Facebook or follow them on Twitter for updates and special promotions. And be sure to enter this AWESOME GIVEAWAY! One of you fabulous Busy-at-Home readers is going to win a Gund Girl for your own creative kids. Use the Rafflecopter form, below, to enter. I have been fortunate to share some really excellent toys with my children and grandchildren, as part of my work as a blogger. I love when those opportunities are from companies I have known and loved since my own childhood. Crayola is an icon in creative and imaginative play. Most impressive is their ability to adapt and change to the needs and interests of the more and more tech-savvy youth of our culture. In December, our ten-year-old, the grandkids and I had a blast reviewing 4 exceptional products from Crayola that fit that forward-thinking ideal — Color Studio HD for iPad and the iMarker to use with it and three fun Story Studio online coloring book makers — Disney Princess Fairytales, Cars 2 Adventure Maker and the Spiderman Comic Maker.

Crayola Story Studio and Color Studio HD products that we reviewed. (Actually, we reviewed a Cars 2 Story Studio, not the Cars Color Wonder product that is pictured.)
The first thing that was pulled out of the package was the Story Studio HD with iMarker. Loading the software onto my iPad only took 2 or 3 minutes and then we were up and running. This would be such a fun activity for car trips! The girls really enjoyed the wide variety of choices to “color” and I loved the “coloring” with no mess part.
The pictures are ANIMATED! The feature can be turned off and on, but it’s really fun to see a picture that you’ve colored start moving on the screen. It’s also very cool that the pictures can be printed to color offline, if your children choose.

The Crayola iMarker ready to be used as soon as the app has loaded onto my iPad.
The Crayola ColorStudio HD app and iMarker let kids’ imaginations run wild as they color moving, animated scenes that come alive with music, sound effects and hidden surprises. The app is free on iTunes App Store with the purchase of the iMarker for $29.99 at Toys R Us, Best Buy, the Apple Store and www.griffintechnology.com.

The Crayola Story Studios, that we reviewed, utilize online technology through the computer. When you purchase a Story Studio product, for only $9.99, you really get a great value for the price. The package includes glossy paper, plain paper, colored pencils or markers and glitter pens (depending on which character variety you select), book binding strips and a secret code that you use to register your product at Crayola Story Studios. Once the product is registered, you have unlimited use to create fun coloring books starring the SpiderMan, Cars 2 or Disney Princess Characters from your product AND your child! What kid wouldn’t love to be part of a coloring book story with their favorite movie characters?
Part of the fun is creating your child’s character. You can upload a picture that the program will then use to create your character or you can start from scratch, picking face shape, hair, eyes, nose, ears, mouth, clothing and colors for everything. Do the characters really look like the pictures you upload? in reality? no. In your child’s imagination? absolutely! The kids loved these and didn’t expect or care that their “cartoonized” characters weren’t their actual twins. Once the character was created, it WAS them and they loved being part of the story.

We uploaded a picture for the first coloring book. Since it really didn't create an amazing duplicate of the child, we simply built the next characters using the option to choose each feature. Both ways were fun and simple and both allow unlimited editing to "change" things up as the mood strikes your budding artists..
Once your character is created, you can insert them into various pre-programmed coloring book stories, which are familiar scenes from the movies, and then print the coloring books on your home printer. You print the covers in full color on the glossy paper and the coloring pages on the plain paper. Then bind your coloring book with the included binding strips and get ready for hours of enjoyment. It was a simple process and the results were so happily received.

Three of the coloring books we created for our grandkids - two princesses and a Cars 2 fan! Each one is filled with coloring pages from the story creator at the Crayola site.
A Busy-at-Home reader is going to win this fun collection of Crayola products for the creative little people in their life! Enter, before midnight, Monday, January 9, using the form below. For the mandatory entry, leave a comment, on this blog post, telling me which characters your imaginative artists will want to try first, if you win- Cars 2, Disney Princesses or SpiderMan or will they be more excited about the iMarker and HD Color Studio for the iPad? That’s it! Once you leave a comment, click the DO IT button, and then ENTER button, in the form below to reveal additional optional entries.

Would I like to participate in a book tour for the new Imagination Station Book Series from Focus on the Family? Ummm…YES! Since my oldest girls, now 27 and 25, were young, Mr. Whitaker, Imagination Station and the Adventures in Odyssey series have been a family favorite pasttime. I remember the days when our radio had to be tuned in at exactly 6 pm to catch the exciting stories. As a parent, of course I loved anything that encouraged our children to think and understand more about being a Christian and what that looks like in every day life, but the kids loved the adventure and “the good guy wins” endings and the ongoing drama of the characters’ lives, too. They “got to know” the characters, understood and recognized different character traits in each and were excited to follow “their stories”. This radio drama tradition didn’t stop with our older kids. It has carried on through all five of our children. Our nine-year-old (soon to be 10 on Thanksgiving day) adores Adventures in Odyssey and I suspect our grandkids will be enjoying them soon, too. Whether you know about Adventures in Odyssey, or not, you’re going to love this series and thanks to Focus on the Family and Tyndale House Publishing, you’ll have a chance to win the whole set in the giveaway they’re sponsoring here!

The Imagination Station book series I have been reading with our nine-year-old. Fantastic supplement for World History and Social Studies!
Focus on the Family has recently added to the Adventures in Odyssey fun, with the Imagination Station book series. Currently, there are six completed books in the set, but seven and eight are just around the corner! If you’re not familiar with Adventures in Odyssey, my first recommendation is that you head over to the website and listen, but I also want to share what Imagination Station is, to give you a little background for this fantastic historical fiction series.
Mr. Whitaker is the owner of Whit’s End, a fun soda shop where kids can hangout. Mr. Whitaker is also an inventor and a Christian. Whit’s End is full of interesting contraptions and inventions, but the most amazing is the Imagination Station, a time machine that sends the users back through time to visit different times throughout history and always landing them smack dab in the middle of a fantastic adventure, that ends up teaching Biblical lessons. The Imagination Station book series has taken those fun-tastic adventures into print, and even better for a homeschooling mom, written them into the historical fiction genre. Historical fiction is a fabulous way to draw students into history. While the actual characters and their stories are fiction, they are woven into the true culture, traditions and events of history, so students are learning as they enjoy the drama. For a teacher, this is a win-win-win — educational, interesting and fun, plus students are reading because they like it!
The Imagination Station book series begins with Voyage with the Vikings, where the main characters are on a quest to find an ancient relic, a mariners sun stone, in order to save a young boy. The adventure lands them smack in the middle of a Viking village, where they meet Eric the Red, and his son, Leif Erickson, who much to his father’s dismay, has recently become a Christian. The two kids learn courage, friendship and experience firsthand, the power of “loving your enemies” in the midst of this exciting adventure. Students will learn about the Viking culture, where they lived, what they believed and how they traveled. The book would be an awesome kick-off for a unit study about the Vikings.
The series continues with 5 more books:
These books are fantastic! My daughter has pored over each exciting page and I have enjoyed reading along with her and discussing the Biblical lessons and historical significance of each one. They are written to be enjoyed by those as young as seven. I think for the average seven-year-old, some of the vocabulary could be challenging if they are left to read on their own, but these would be fun and exciting read-alouds with an older reader. At least six more titles are planned for the series, with Book 7 due to be released in January 2012 and Book 8 in May.
We were absolutely thrilled to be given the opportunity to review this delightful six-book set and excited to add them to our family library! Our kids and grandkids will enjoy them long into the future. I encourage you to use the links above to get these bargain-priced books for your own book- and history-buffs. Amazon offers them at only $4.99 each, and they are currently part of Amazon’s “Buy 3, Get 1 Free” special, meaning they will be easy on the Christmas budget and the enjoyment will last well beyond the holidays. Plus, one lucky Busy-at-Home reader will win the six-book set for their own family! Enter the giveaway, below.

Mega Bloks are a family favorite, in our household; and their new Dora’s Garden Gazebo set has only reinforced that! I had the chance to review this fun toy with our 3- and 4-year-old granddaughters, over the weekend, and was so tickled to see the fun they had. The toy is designed for ages 3 and up and has the same “chunky” pieces we are used to with Mega Bloks, but it includes more than just blocks. The pieces can be used to build a “gazebo” and also includes a Dora the Explorer figure, a second skirt (yup! Dora can change clothes.), bluebird, fence, watering can, flower pot, flower, evergreen tree, umbrella, and picnic table. AND, with only 19 pieces, it is easy to gather them back into the box when play is finished.

Two happy Dora fans!
The one possible drawback, if you can call it that, is that some of the pieces are small. If you have a toddler who enjoys putting things in their mouth, this could obviously pose a choking hazard, which is clearly stated on the packaging. I know most of you, like me, understand what “ages 3 and up” means, and exercise common sense and good judgment in your own personal circumstances. My not-quite-two grandson (He’s not really a “taste everything” sort of toddler), engaged in play with this toy several times over the weekend, with my close supervision, and had an absolute blast. Would I leave him alone with it? No! Did he benefit from playing with it while I kept a close watch? Absolutely! Now on to the good stuff! What did I love about it?

A closeup of one setup. They were playing at the kitchen counter while I cooked.

A change of location and a whole new adventure.
Mega Bloks never disappoints our family, when it comes to creative learning toys that even younger children can enjoy and learn from! Really, their toys are good for such a wide age-range, depending on which toys you select. If you haven’t experienced their fine products, I hope you’ll visit their website and learn more about them. A new feature of that website is their Mega Bloks Family Club, where you will find special offers, contests, sweepstakes and promotions on lots of Mega Bloks toys; as well as an educational and informative blog, the opportunity to receive a free email newsletter AND a COUPON for $5 off $30 in Mega Bloks toys, just for signing up! It’s definitely worth your time to check it out!
One of you will be able to win a Dora’s Garden Gazebo for your own family in the giveaway made possible here at Busy-at-Home, by Mega Blocks and Child’s Play Communications.

Over the course of time, there are some brands that become household names. These have been trusted and reputable companies since we were children; and we have watched them grow and adapt to a changing culture, establishing themselves as understanding families and their needs. Crayola is one of these forward thinking corporations still providing quality, trusted products for our families, as well as incorporating new technologies into their offerings. In 2011, Crayola is so much more than a box of crayons. We recently had the opportunity to review a selection of their newest products for adolescent/tween girls, Pop Art Pixies.

Our happy nine-year-old in "I'm-going-to-be-crafty heaven".
The winter months, when the weather often prohibits outdoor activity, can present challenges for finding activities that keep our children interested, challenged and creative. Certainly video games, computers and TV are vying for their time and attention, but as parents, we still need to redirect their time and energies into pursuits that allow them to develop creativity, to think, and to be actively productive. Pop Art Pixies can help us do exactly that. When our nine-year-old heard that we were going to be conducting this review, she was simply on pins and needles waiting for the package to arrive. The appeal is undeniable. The quality is what I would consider the top of similar products. The end results have been so incredibly satisfying, that it was almost an afterthought for our daughter to visit the Pop Art Pixies Virtual Clubhouse and set up her account. Now, that she has done it, she enjoys visiting popartpixies.com and doing online projects, but by far, her favorite is the physical hands-on projects in the Pop Art Pixies Craft Kits.

Being "crafty" online at popartpixies.com. She makes cards and has designed some cute shadow boxes.
There are four Pop Art Pixies, Skye, who is interested in ecology and the environment, Naomi, whose passions lean toward music and technology, Tatum, a social butterfly that loves to throw parties and Maya who encourages creative expression. Each of the pixies’ passions are expressed in one or more craft kits. And these kits are wonderful!

Anxious to start the water bottle kit!

Happy, happy, happy with the finished product! This water bottle goes everywhere with her, now.
The kits are complete with everything necessary to complete the project. I have not had to purchase a single item, in order for my daughter to make any of these high -quality craft projects. I also have not participated, other than to oooooh and aaaaah over the finished products. She has read the instructions and independently completed each project on her own, leaving her feeling confident and accomplished. So, far she has completed five and can’t wait to put her creative touches on the two remaining kits that we received. I want to tell you about each one, but before I get involved in that process, I don’t want to forget to share this great deal with you. Crayola and My Blog Spark have arranged for Busy-at-Home readers to receive a $2 coupon off any one Crayola Pop Art Pixies craft kit! When you see the already great prices, you’ll know what a fantastic deal that is! Plus at the end of this review, you’ll have a chance to enter a giveaway that will net your little crafter FOUR of these fabulous kits!

Tatum's Decoupage Glass Plate Kit

Plate decorating ideas.
She has decoupaged plates with Tatum’s Glass Plate Decoupage Kit. No one was more surprised than me, to open the box and find not one, but THREE full-size glass plates and more than enough supplies to decorate them all. This kit sells for $19.98 in the Crayola Store. That’s only a little over $6 per plate and they would be awesome as gifts for a birthday or in a wall display in your daughter’s room. To have three completed projects, that can actually be used when they are finished, is well worth that reasonable price. The kit included three plates (2 square, 1 round), a paint brush, decoupage solution and three sheets of printed decorative paper that designs can be cut from. Other pictures or thin scrapbooking paper you have around the house could easily be used, as well.

Skye's Water Bottle Kit

The first kit our nine-year-old grabbed from the box was Skye’s Water Bottle. The aluminum water bottle was included along with paint and paint brush plus many peel & stick stencils she could use to help add the designs. She finished the project quickly and waited (not so patiently) for the paint to be completely dry. She takes the water bottle with her everywhere, now. The kits aren’t just fun, they are useful and practical, too. This kit can be purchased from the Crayola store for only $9.98!

Naomi’s Bento Stationary Box Kit

Naomi’s Bento Stationary Box Kit was so much fun to make and she love’s using it. I initially had to Google “bento box” to learn that they are a traditional Japanese lunchbox. After that, the design of this kit made a lot more sense to me. The kit came with the molded box and lid, plus tons of stickers for decorating it. There are two pens that fit into the lid and look exactly like chopsticks. The kit also includes 25 sticky notes, 1 stamp pad, 1 wasabi-shaped stamper and 12 sheets of stationary. The box could also be used to store jewelry or “treasures”. No matter how she uses it, your daughter will enjoy the creativity of this useful and fun kit. It’s also available at the Crayola Store for only $9.98. Can you believe how great these prices are?!!!

Sample Completed Pendant on the included stand.
I can’t keep saying that each of these kits was my daughter’s favorite. – lol- So, I just need to express that she loved them all and Maya’s Glass Pendant Kit was no exception. The glass pendant has a glass back that can be removed, so the colored insert syour little crafter creates can be inserted into the pendant. (The kit includes 6 different insert designs, which can be changed to make a different fashion statement every day!) After the insert is in the pendant, just replace the back and add the necklace cord and a few decorative beads. My daughter actually danced over to her dad with so much excitement, to show him what she had made. She will wear it over and over and you can bet she’ll change the design to fit her mood and outfit. The cardboard stand included in the kit was our only disappointment, in working with all 7 of the kits. It is not very sturdy. She had no trouble decorating it, but it was difficult to assemble and not very durable after it was put together. Her lovely pendant will likely just be kept in her jewelry box. Even if the stand was not included in the kit, it would still be an awesome value at only $9.98. The kit includes 1 glass pendant, accessory beads, 6 Crayola Recoloritz markers, 6 easy-to-change acetate disc designs that girls can change to match their mood, and two 30-inch nylon cords in black and brown.

Skye’s Wind Chime Kit

Sample of Skye's Wind Chime
Skye’s Wind Chime Kit gives me a hope for spring, even in this cold, winter weather. I love that the kit includes not one, but two wind chimes! It really does allow for imagination and personal creativity. My nine-year-old painted hers in her fanciful, colorful personal style and they are adorable! She is anticipating warmer weather, so she can hang them outside, but is enjoying them in her bedroom for the time being. The kit includes six pots of DecoArt Patio Paint, a paintbrush, 8 aluminum rods to create the chimes, 2 decorative wooden pieces (a bird and a butterfly), string and is available at the Crayola store for only $14.98.
The two kits that our youngest daughter hasn’t gotten to yet, are Naomi’s Color Glow Lamp Kit and Maya’s Shadow Box Kit. The only reason they aren’t complete is that I have been trying to encourage her to spread the fun over several days. I have a feeling that these two will be decorating her room, by evening, though. It’s just too much fun to create things that are pretty and useful. She has gained a lot of confidence in her ability to make something that actually has purpose and looks good and I expect that her passion for creativity, art and decorating has been multiplied with the success of these kits.
Naomi’s Color Glow Lamp KitNaomi’s Color Glow Lamp Kit is a Pagoda-inspired plastic shade that girls can assemble, decorate, and transform into a one-of-a-kind lamp that lets their self-expression shine through! Perfect for display in their room, Naomi’s Color Glow Lamp casts cool, colorful effects that will enhance any décor. The lamp can be lit in two different ways – press the on/off button once and the red, yellow, green, and blue lights flash in a random pattern; or, hold the button down as the lamp changes colors and release it when it lands on the color you’d like to stay lit. The kit comes with 1 accordion shade, 1 base with LEDs, 1 mirrored cone to refract even more color and light, string to hold the mirrored cone, colorful decals to decorate the shade, and instructions. This kit is sold in the Crayola store for only $14.98.

Naomi's Shadow Box Kit
I am really impressed with how generously supplied the Crayola Pop Art Pixies Kits are; and the shadow box kit is no exception. It actually includes two shadow boxes. Maya’s Shadow Box Kit lets girls express their inner artist in more ways than one! They can paint their personal shadow box and create art for the interior with materials included in the kit or with mementos they’ve collected. The kit includes 2 wooden shadow boxes, 3 design kits, 35 foam squares to create a 3-dimensional look, 6 sheets of colored pattern paper, 4 pots of glass paint, a paintbrush, wood varnish, and instructions. The dual shadow box kit is, also, only $14.98 in the Crayola store.
..
Crayola and My Blog Spark have arranged for a Busy-at-Home reader to win four of these fun craft kits for themselves. The winner will receive Tatum’s “Decoupage Glass Plates” kit, Naomi’s “Create a Color Glow Lamp” kit, Naomi’s “Create a Stationary Box” kit, and Skye’s “Create a Water Bottle” kit. What a fantastic prize package!
