How many times did your mom tell you, “It’s the thought that counts.” We really don’t fully grasp the truth of that statement in childhood. How many times did your mom tell you, “It’s the thought that counts.” We really don’t fully grasp the truth of that statement in childhood. The smallest gifts and gestures can bring uncalculated happiness. Take for instance, a tiny handmade booklet with a Bible story, carefully made and delivered with love, by our five-year-old granddaughter. The joy she expressed in giving was only surpassed by the happiness that welled up in me when she presented it. The gift was not monetarily costly, even the elements to make it would not have seemed to be valuable, and yet, to me this is a great treasure.

At other times, a phone call from someone dear, at just the moment when I need it, shares love, and evidences God’s goodness and provision for what may seem a small need to others, while offering a huge gesture of love and support that means the world to me. We never know the unspoken need or circumstance that the smallest of gestures or gifts, on our part, may be able to solve or satisfy. Teaching our children to be attentive and aware of “the small things” is important and the Christmas season certainly affords ample opportunities to practice loving and serving. Let your kids see firsthand, that the smallest gifts and acts of kindness can let someone know they are thought of, and cared about.

That’s the reason I have so enjoyed this “sharing” campaign from Kleenex. Throughout the course of Kleenex’s Softness Worth Sharing campaign, our family has been able to share several care packs with people we care about. It seems like a small gesture, but you and I both know there are definitely days when going to the mailbox and finding, even something simple, with a message about how we are loved and cared for can brighten the entire day and change our outlook on the world. It feels good to be remembered and I think it’s awesome that Kleenex has provided a cost-free, simple way for us to all reach out and brighten someone’s day.

There’s still time to participate, so you can add a little “merry” to someone’s Christmas mail. Pick up specially-marked Kleenex multi-packs at your favorite store. Use the code attached to ship Kleenex Softness Worth Sharing Care Packs to the people you want to bless with a small gesture of love and caring. You can personalize the message, fill out the shipping address and then let Kleenex do the work to send it off to someone special. I can’t wait to hear who you share some Christmas “smiles” with!

When I first won my iPad in an online giveaway, I kept it under lock and key. No one was allowed to use it, except me, on pains of … well … pain. :) I couldn’t imagine turning my teenagers, or even my husband, loose to recklessly download apps willy-nilly and carelessly leave this awesome piece of technology lying around, uncared for. I could never have dreamed that, today, the most common users of this handy device would be my teenagers and preschool- and primary school-age grandchildren! I very rarely get my hands on the iPad, but it gets plenty of use! This phenomenon is not uncommon, in our society, today; and even the youngest members of families are so technologically savvy that companies are beginning to design apps that are age-appropriate for their learning and playing needs. Toy companies are beginning to see this need, as well, and I’m so enthusiastic about the way Pressman Toy has tackled the challenge.
At the BlogHer conference in New York, this summer, I had a chance to play a couple of new games from the Pressman Toy iPieces line and I couldn’t wait for an opportunity to show them to my family. We recently reviewed two of the five available iPieces games, here, at our home; and we have definitely put some miles on them! We tested Air Hockey and The Game of Goose. They’ve both been big hits. Let me explain why. They are perfectly geared to younger children, and yet, easy for Mom and Dad to love, too. How is that possible? Let me show you!

Love #1: Look at the size of these game boxes! They don't take a lot of space and they are all the same size -- easy to stack and store. How many collapsing cardboard game boxes, filled with remnants of game pieces, do you have tucked away in a closet, somewhere? I'm ashamed to even try and count them, any more. :) With a minimum of pieces, since most of the game components are digitized into the game (even dice!), there aren't dozens of tiny pieces to lose or to suck up in the vacuum cleaner. What a revolutionary new board game concept! I love it! Plus the containers are sturdy and durable.
Love #2: Playing board games with our kids and grandkids allows us to have conversations and really connect, as we enjoy the fun of the game. It’s sometimes difficult, however, to carve out the amount of time necessary to play traditional board games that require hours and hours, or even days, to complete. We either have to leave them set up somewhere in the house, and come back to them, quit before the game is finished, or force ourselves to stick with it for the duration (which reinforces that desire to avoid board games in the future – not a good plan). The beauty of Pressman Toys’ iPieces games is that they are interactive and fun, but required game time is brief. Not only does that fit a small child’s attention span, so they can easily be included, but it makes it so much easier for Mom and Dad to have the time to play a game, or even two or three!

This is all that you will have to keep track of for the Air Hockey game, which brings me to Love #3: I don't have to be concerned that the kids won't remember to put away dozens of tiny game pieces, cards, toy money, die, etc. in a falling-apart cardboard box. I'm not nearly as likely to step on a game piece in the middle of the night or suck one up in the vacuum cleaner, because the games are simple to put away - even for small children! Yay!

Air Hockey is a two-player realistic miniature version of the game you love! Never lose the pucks, because they're part of the 3D digital display. It's fast-paced, interactive and crazy fun to play (especially if you have a couple of super competitive players involved)!
Love #4: iPieces games are inexpensive and there are already five different games available! At Amazon.com the games range in price from $5.98 for Snakes and Ladders, to 12.99 for Pool. There are three others, the Fishing Game, and the two we tested, Air Hockey and the Game of Goose. Love! Love! Love! If you have an iPad in your home, your whole family, right down to the youngest members, will have a blast with any or all of these titles! Once you own the game, download the app for your iPad for free and enjoy some fabulous family fun and laughter.
Love #5: In my opinion, even though the main feature is fun, all these games have some educational value for the littlest ones in your household. I know that the Game of Goose we reviewed certainly did! Our grandkids not only had to practice patience, sharing and waiting for their turn, but they learned to recognize number sets on die, practiced counting as they moved their game pieces along the path and learned what it means to follow instructions. This particular game is also good for fine-tuning small motor skills and eye-hand coordination, as the kids move their game piece around the virtual board.

Our 11-year-old taught our grandkids (3, 5, and 6) to play the Game of Goose on our iPad. They caught on quickly -- even the three-year-old. It took him about 30 seconds to figure out that every time someone landed on a square with a picture, an animation would start. Of course, he had to test out what each one would do before we could officially play the game! :)

In this animation the geese "fly" across the board to show you what square to land your piece on. Cool!

The Game of Goose can be played by 2 to 6 players, so you can get the whole family involved. Again, the only pieces to keep track of are the goose game pieces which are stored in this sturdy, little case.

The virtual game board for the Game of Goose. Even the die is animated. Simply touch it with a finger to roll it. It's a fun paradox to have the "retro" almost antique-look of this game board in a modern electronic device! Even with multiple players, the Game of Goose plays quickly and is lots of fun!

You all remember that my family had the great pleasure, recently, of being some of the first people in the country to taste the new International Delights Iced Coffees. They were a beverage sensation that even my kids couldn’t get enough of! The great news is that in only 3 more days, you’ll be able to share some with your own family! Beginning January 15, they will be available in the dairy cases at WalMart and Sam’s Club!

Delicious Iced Coffee from International Delights! You'll be able to pick some up for your own family beginning January 15! Three flavors to choose from -- Original, Mocha and Vanilla. My kids think we need Mocha on tap in the kitchen!
It’s always fun to receive a gift, but for me it’s so incredibly fun to give one — especially if it can be totally unexpected! Collective Bias and International Delights provided me with the perfect opportunity to do just that. As my family and I were enjoying our sneak preview of International Delights #Iced Coffee, I was given the opportunity to send the same package I reviewed to another blogging friend as a surprise gift. What a kick! I waited with great anticipation and then it happened! My blogging friend, Melissa Rheinlander, posted a message on a forum board I subscribe to, saying how excited she was to have received the package and wondering who had sent it. I love surprises!
Melissa’s blog is Keeping Up With the Rheinlander’s and it’s an excellent place to read book reviews, enter giveaways and be introduced to some excellent blogs through the blog hops she hosts there. She’s a stay-at-home mom with a passion for family and taking pictures, besides being a busy blogger; and my guess is that International Delights Iced Coffees will be as welcome a treat in her home as they were in ours. I “met” Melissa through one of the blogging networks that we are members of and have been so grateful for her encouragement and support as I have built my blog and learned about writing. She is a colleague and a friend. I hope you’ll stop by Keeping Up With the Rheinlander’s blog or Facebook page and say, “Hi!” Let her know that Busy-at-Home sent you.

Treat yourself or treat a friend!
Now, I know you’re excited about the creamy, delicious iced coffees that International Delights will make available through your local WalMarts and Sam’s Clubs on Sunday and I can’t wait for you to try them. They’ll be a perfect refreshing treat when you just feel like relaxing and unwinding at the end of a long day or for surprising guests when you’re entertaining. I think they would be awesome additions to gift baskets of homemade cookies and pretty glassware. Who do you know that’s having a birthday or that would enjoy a delicious pick-me-up surprise? Now, you have an idea for a wonderful, frugal gift!

One-yard pieces of 45" fabric, some thread, straight pins, scissors and your sewing machine are the main necessities for this simple project.
Guess what? You can create some inexpensive, and yet very personalized gifts, for Christmas. Yes, you can! It’s super simple. Think positive!
I just made three adorable pillowcases for our grandkids, in a little over an hour, and THAT included stopping to take pictures and to start some rye bread rising! Here’s all you’ll need to get started on your DIY pillowcase project:
Fold the yard of fabric in half, right-sides-together, so that it will measure about 22″ x 36″. Pin the long edge and the short edge that will be the bottom of your pillowcase, to hold them in place while you are stitching.

Right-sides-together means your fabric will be folded inside out. Pin the long edge and one short edge. The short edge will be the bottom of your pillowcase.
Start sewing the 5/8″ seam at the folded corner on the bottom edge of your pillowcase. Be sure to back-stitch to lock your stitches in place.

Run the pinned edge of your fabric along the 5/8" guide on your sewing machine to create the seam, being sure to back-stitch to lock your seam .
When you are 5/8″ from the long edge of your fabric, leave the needle of your machine down in the fabric, lift the presser foot and pivot the fabric, so that the unstitched edge is now ready to be stitched on your machine at the 5/8″ guide mark. This will create a perfectly sharp corner.

Pivoting the fabric so I can stitch down the long edge and create a sharp corner. Note that the sewing machine needle is down, holding the fabric in place, while the presser foot is up.
Now stitch the long edge of your pillowcase and back stitch to lock the seam when you reach the end.

Backstitch to lock your seam and keep your stitching from unraveling.
If you have a serger or a newer machine than mine, finish your edges in the way that works best for you, but I zigzag my seams to help keep them from raveling when the pillowcase is laundered. Run the presser foot along the stitching in the seam you just made, to zigzag the edge of the seam.

The arrow is pointing to the zig-zagged stitches on the outside of the regular seam.
Trim the seam, as close as possible to the zig-zag stitches, without cutting the stitches. Trimming the seam removes extra bulk and gives a nice finished edge. If you have a pair of pinking shears, even better. Mine are so dull they wouldn’t cut hot butter. Definitely time for a new pair!

Trim the seam close to the zig-zag stitching.
Using a steam iron, press under 1/2″ on the unfinished top edge of the pillowcase. Turn the fabric toward the inside of the pillowcase. Press the 1/2″ hem around the full-circumference of the pillowcase top.

Press 1/2" hem toward the inside of the case at top edge of pillowcase.
The 1/2″ inch you already pressed under has created a nice clean edge at the top of your case. Now, you need to fold it over one more time to create the final finished 3″ hem. Press the hem in all the way around the top of the case using a steam iron.

Fold over three inches to create the finished hem and press it in with a steam iron.
Now, line the edge of your presser foot up with the folded under edge of the hem you created and stitch around the circumference. Be sure to overstitch the seam when you get to the end or back-stitch to lock the seam.

Stitching the pillowcase hem.
Turn your finished pillowcase, right-side-out and press out any wrinkles. You’re finished! It’s that simple!

The finished pillowcase.

Perfect fit!

I finished these three in about an hour. They were simple and inexpensive, but I know my grandkids will be thrilled with them!

It takes something pretty unique to get my attention in the world of phone technology. With phones that can take pictures, record video, wake me with an alarm in the morning, search the Internet, send me an alert to remind me of an event on my calendar, send text messages in a blink and believe it or not, even make a phone call now and then, there isn’t much left to wow! me. We haven’t had a house phone for over six years, now, since our cell phones are (technically) always with us and there is no sense in paying two phone bills, when the house phone was rarely used. What I HAVE missed about having a house phone, however, is the multiple handsets, scattered through the house, so I could answer wherever I happened to be working or playing in our home. This becomes especially obvious to me, when I can hear my cell phone ringing, but can’t remember where I left my purse, where it normally resides. Or sometimes, I don’t hear it ringing at all because it’s in my purse in a completely different part of my house. Our home has a finished basement, main level and an upstairs, so if my purse is in the living room by my chair and I am in the basement doing laundry or upstairs in the bedroom, it’s very possible I won’t always hear it.

The VTech DS6421-3 Cordless Phone System with "Connect to Cell" Technology. It comes with the main base and then two "satellite" units.
Enter VTech’s DS6421-3 Expandable Cordless Phones with “Connect to Cell“. I have been reviewing and testing this excellent system for about two weeks, now, and I’m absolutely hooked. Everything I loved and missed about having a house phone, plus so much more than I dreamed of, is connected directly to two of our family’s four cell phones – mine and my husband’s. We still don’t have house phone service, through a phone company, but now, those two cell phones can make and receive calls through the handsets in our new VTech house phones. This is not just convenient based on where I am in our home. It’s a great help with our nearly 10-year-old who doesn’t have a cell phone, has no need for one, but still needs to make a call now and then. If I’m gone and she wants to call my cell phone to reach me, she can just use the house phones to dial me up through her dad’s cell line. This is an important feature for her, since it is very common for my husband to not remember where his cell phone is. As long as it’s in the house, it doesn’t matter if he can find it, because she can use the house phone handsets to call me and they will just access his cell phone signal (wherever it is) to do it. It all works through Bluetooth and it’s the coolest new gadget we’ve had in awhile!

This is the base set up in my living room - right next to the big, comfy chair where I write my blog posts.
It was so easy to set up. I plugged in the base, made my cell phone’s blue tooth discoverable and just followed the menu prompts on the VTech handset. In seconds my phone was connected. I plugged in the other two bases in other parts of the house and from that moment on, I have been picking up calls coming to my cell, no matter where I am in our home. Love, love, love this phone system, but picking up our cell signal is only scratching the surface of its features.
The one minor complaint I have about the system is that the process for dialing a number directly from the directory is a little complicated. If I type a phone number into the handset, then I can just press “dial” and my call is placed. However, if I select a name from the directory, there is no “dial” option. When I choose a name from the contact list in my directory, I have to press the # key until the number is displayed in the correct format (area code +number) and then select the “cell” button to actually dial the call. Not a huge deal, but in the best of all perfect worlds, I would just be able to land on a contact and hit dial.

Both satellites are identical. I have one in the kitchen and one in the basement, but I think I will be moving the kitchen one upstairs and putting the base in the kitchen. Then I will have a "house" phone on every floor. Too cool!
There are so many features to this phone, that I am still getting excited about new ones that I accidentally discover! I was so excited to be able to have the VTech DS6421-3 connected to our cells, I was content to just use that option for the first several days. Now, I use them as intercoms and have imported my cell phone’s contact list into them! The next big achievement will be a conference call and transferring a call from one handset to another or placing one call on hold to take another! The added bonus is that at this time of year, we can make all our holiday calls and connections and be able to have several people involved in the conversations, at once. You can add satellite units to this system, up to a total of 12! I’m feeling very technologically savvy and super frugal to be able to do all of these things without actually paying to have a home line installed. Needless to say, this phone system gets a big thumb up from me, for busy families on a strictly cell phone budget!

Every other member of our family can be found wandering about with fuzzy little black earbuds hanging from their ears, connected to an MP3 device of some sort. Even my nine-year-old! These devices are from a variety of brands and price-points. I personally have never had an MP3 player of my own, and until now, didn’t even consider that it was something I needed. I listen to a LOT of Christian radio, both music and talk radio and until, now was content to blast it through the house, so I could hear from whatever corner I happened to be working in. What I didn’t realize is how incredibly versatile and useful the right MP3 player could be. Enter my new (beautiful blue) SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip.

My SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip MP3 player. It's small size makes it convenient to carry wherever I am. The handy clip attaches it to my pocket or shirt with ease. See how small that powerhouse of storage mini SDHC card is? Amazing!
Easy to charge, easy to sync and easy to use, the Clip Zip is so much more than just a music player, although it can hold hours and hours of it. It has 4GB of on-board memory (The black and gray models can have 4GB or 8GB.) and is expandable by plugging a teeny tiny micro SDHC card into the slot on the side of the player. These little bitty cards are available separately and can provide up to an additional whopping 32GB of storage! That’s a ton of music, but the Clip Zip is formatted for so much more. I can store podcasts and entire audiobooks! It is also a fully-functioning FM radio with better reception that I get on any other device in my home! This tiny, feature-packed MP3 player also has a voice recorder. I can record my grocery list and play it back in the grocery store, which is a huge benefit for a forgetful, perimenopausal woman who often loses the paper she wrote her grocery list on or completely forgets to bring the paper to the store. The Sansa Clip Zip can also hold all your album art and includes a handy stop-watch. It plays AAC Compatible (DRM-free iTunes), MP3, WMA, secure WMA, Ogg Vorbis, and FLAC, so your options are plentiful! I also like that the screen is large enough to be easy to read and navigation and control buttons are easy to understand, even for a technology amateur like me.

I’ll be the first to admit that my “exercise routine” consists mainly of jogging up and down the stairs with baskets of laundry, running from the kitchen sink or stove top to the table where homeschool lessons are underway, so I can answer a question or playing kickball with the Jr. High Youth Group on Wednesday nights. The Clip Zip is great in all those instances, however, I love walking when I get the extra time in my schedule, even though it’s not a frequent occurrence. So, when I do get an opportunity to just take off for a mind-clearing, energy-renewing walk, my Sansa Zip Clip is a welcome companion, whether I’m listening to a devotional message, a radio program, an audiobook, my favorite music or feeding my soul with life-renewing messages from God’s Word. (Did you know you could get the entire Bible in MP3 format?) So cool!
I love the options I have when I clip on this versatile little MP3 player. It goes where I go, without being cumbersome or even noticed, and I can enjoy all kinds of audio media choices with my hands free to do other things. The sound is crisp and clear. I don’t know a lot about the technical aspects of that, but I do know from listening to the conversations of my family members that quality ear buds are critically important to good sound with an MP3 player. The pair that comes with the SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip is excellent, in my opinion. I know they are better than the speakers in my laptop or even on our home stereo. I am also impressed with the radio reception on the Clip Zip. My favorite stations are crystal clear — no small feat, when considering I have to move our home stereo to different locations throughout the house, looking for a spot with good enough reception to tune in what I want to listen to.

Yes, now the truth is out. Late at night I curl up in my big blue chair, wearing my husband's big cozy corduroy shirt and no makeup, tapping away at my laptop keyboard.
See how perfect the Clip Zip is in this relaxing situation?
Whether I am relaxing in my comfy chair with my laptop, doing chores around the house, or on the go, the Sansa Clip Zip Mp3 Player opens up a whole new world of audio entertainment at an incredibly affordable price. Coming in just under $50, this little device is much more affordable and gives you a lot of bang for your feature-purchasing buck when compared to other brands. It’s an excellent Christmas gift option for the music-lovers and radio-buffs on your gift list!
One lucky Grand Prize winning reader is going to win a coupon code for a FREE Clip Zip of their choice with FREE shipping at the SanDisk store and 4 more readers will receive a coupon code for 20% off the regular Clip Zip price, again, at the SanDisk Store. Do you love the flavor of real butter, but settle for the soft spreadability of margarine or “butter-like” spreads. Convenience often wins out over nutrition and flavor when we make choices at the grocery store. That’s why I am so excited to share my latest review. Butter Bell Crocks make it possible to have your butter AND eat it, too — spreadable, soft and delicious! My family and I have been enjoying it for a week, now; and we are hooked.

Butter Bell Crocks are a modern version of the old-time butter crocks used in France, years ago. They will keep real butter soft and free from spoilage or odors for up to thirty days (although a stick of butter lasts no where near that long for our family), right on your kitchen counter. It really is an amazing concept and it’s so simple! All I did was soften a stick of butter, then used a spoon to pack it into the “bell” of the crock’s lid. It’s definitely important to pack it well. I wasn’t careful about that the first time I used it and the whole stick of butter slid out of the lid when I opened the crock. I replaced it, packing well, as per the instructions and haven’t had a problem since. Once the butter was packed in the lid, I added 1/3 cup of cool water into the base of the bone china crock and then put the lid on. Easy, peasy!

Adding softened butter to the bell-shaped lid.
The water in the base provides an airtight seal for the lid and the crock is designed to reflect outside heat while insulating and keeping the butter cool. The water needs to be changed out every three days, which isn’t difficult to remember since the pretty little crock is out on the counter where I see it frequently as I work in the kitchen. The crocks are available in several styles and colors. The Antique Style Azure (blue) butter crock I received to conduct this review is a perfect accent in my kitchen. I love its “country” look. With several styles to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect fit for your own decor. Authentic Butter Bell Crocks are produced by the L. Tremain company and they make other great items for your kitchen to coordinate with the crocks, like spoon rests, pitchers, salt and pepper shakers and more.

This is how it looked the first time I filled the Butter Bell Crock. It's not packed tightly enough and the butter slid out of the lid.
These unique butter crocks will make beautiful gifts for Christmas or for your own holiday dinner table. From now, through December 15, L. Tremain is running a great special where you can buy any two crocks and get a third, (white with blue trim bistro butter crock) for free, so it’s a great time to get started on your Christmas shopping! I’m also happy to announce that L. Tremain has generously sponsored a giveaway for Busy-at-Home’s A Homemade Holiday series and one of you will win a Butter Bell Crock for your own kitchen!

How it should look when the butter is packed into the lid properly. Isn't this the best idea ever? It's functional decor!
