Tomorrow, Wednesday, April 4 is NATIONAL WALKING DAY. That means it’s the perfect time to do some spring cleaning in more than just our homes. It’s time to clean up those bad habits that keep us stationary and lethargic — to throw out those crazy lies that we whisper to ourselves, saying that we can’t do it, before we even try. Let’s lace up our sneakers and get moving. The National Heart Association says we can reduce our risk for heart disease by exercising for as little as 30 minutes a day – even if that exercise is just walking.
According to the AHA, walking is the simplest positive change you can make to improve heart health AND it has the lowest drop-out rate of any physical activity! Walking just thirty minutes a day can:
- Reduce the risk of coronary heart disease
- Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
- Improve blood lipid profile
- Maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity
- Enhance mental well being
- Reduce the risk of osteoporosis
- Reduce the risk of breast and colon cancer
- Reduce the risk of non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes
So what are we waiting for? The weather is gorgeous and spring is in the air. Be part of the AHA’s nationwide challenge to burn one billion calories by 2020.
Jenny Craig Brand Ambassadors Valerie Bertinelli, Ross Mathews and Nicole Sullivan – who all lost weight on Jenny – are fans of walking to help them stay healthy, too!
Ross walked to get his morning coffee every day; when her kids were younger, Nicole would always walk through her neighborhood with her baby in the Baby Bjorn on her chest (It was mommy/baby bonding time, and a way to get her exercise in too!; and Valerie was able to stay fit on her Italian vacation by walking while site seeing every day. Walking is easy and fun, and the benefits can be tremendous (did you know that nearly 70 percent of Americans do not engage in regular physical activity, and that physical inactivity doubles the risk of heart disease, our nation’s No. 1 killer?).
Ross Mathews lost 40 lbs* on Jenny Craig. “I lost 40 lbs. on Jenny, and you know what, I never went to the gym, not even once! Instead, I fell in love with walking. Every morning I went walking, and look what it did for me. Just 10 minutes a day!”
Nicole Sullivan lost 35 lbs* on Jenny Craig. “I lost 35 lbs. with the help of Jenny and just by walking. I never ran, never stepped foot in the gym, but walking is the best exercise. It clears your mind, and makes you skinny!”

I’m not going to kid you. This is something I’ve tried before and after a time, just slipped back into my old habits. I can definitely use your help and encouragement. Do you walk every day? By yourself or with someone else? What keeps you motivated and interested? I’d love to hear your personal stories, tips and ideas to help us all take the first steps to getting fit, by simply walking. Busy-at-Home readers rock! So, I know you’ll have some good pointers!
*Clients following the Jenny Craig program, on average, lose 1-2 pounds per week.
