Like all of you, our family has been busy getting ready to celebrate Christmas. Planning for guests and special family times always means planning meals, treats and snacks that go above and beyond the standard daily fare. Doing things a little out of the ordinary can actually become a fun family tradition. For instance, Christmas Eve is a night that everyone, kids and adults alike, look forward to all year. Not for all the contemporary reasons you might expect. It wouldn’t seem like much to others, perhaps, but the part of a tradition that makes it significant and special isn’t the activity so much as it is who you share it with. Ours involves our entire family and I wouldn’t trade it for any other kind of event.
When our oldest daughters (now 29 and 27) were still in elementary school and our 21-year-old was just a baby, we hadn’t really established any long-standing holiday traditions. Exactly WHEN we opened gifts was a toss-up. It might be Christmas Eve or it could be Christmas morning. On this particular year, we let everyone open one gift on Christmas Eve. My husband received a set of four soda shoppe ice cream/shake glasses and an ice cream scoop. I think the girls were as excited about his gift, as their own! Everybody got to make their own customized, super-duper ice cream sundae and THAT was what we ate for supper, that night. This kind of thing leaves an impression on young kids — believe me! With great excitement and smudges of ice cream and chocolate syrup on their faces and hands, our daughters declared that we should have ice cream sundaes for supper, EVERY Christmas Eve. And thus, the tradition was born — Christmas Eve services to celebrate the true gift of Christmas, our Savior, Jesus Christ — then a drive through our community ooohing and aaahing at all the Chrismas lights — finally, ending up at home for our now infamous ice cream sundae supper. I have had to add glasses to our set, several times as we have been blessed to have our family increase in size. As our five kids have grown and the oldest have started their own families, it is an unimaginable blessing that we have been able to continue this tradition and even add our grandchildren into it. It’s really hard, in the years when someone can’t be here, and I know as we get older and older that will happen more often, so I revel in this simple tradition for as long as we can carry it on. You see, it’s got nothing to do with the ice cream. It has everything to do with the people. Any tradition becomes a thrill because of who you share it with.
Since I’ve had the great good fortune to be able to review a NESCAFE Dolce Gusto, just in time for the holidays, I was excited about all the coffee-house quality beverages we were going to be able to share with guests. Then I realized that in addition to being perfect for entertaining, this attractive little beverage station would also be the perfect addition to our Christmas Eve ice cream supper. Coming in from the cold, the Dolce Gusto will provide steaming mugs of cocoa (Chocochino) for the little ones and add a “grown up” flair to the ice cream for those who are feeling adventurous. Think Caramel Macchiato with Butter Pecan Ice Cream. Yum!
